Is he Sleeping through the Night?

I hate this question. It definitely tops the "Is he a good baby" question in my eyes. Maybe because I've heard it more.

For the record, Monkey is almost 7 months and he is NOT sleeping through the night. He never has and who knows when he will.

Why do people feel the need to tell me that their sister's hairdresser's brother's little girl has been sleeping through the night since 1 month. Do you think the bags under my eyes, or my un-brushed hair care?

I don't need tips to get him to sleep through the night either. No, putting extra stuff in his bottle won't work. No, pointing his head west when sleeping won't work and no suspending him from the ceiling won't help either (that last one wasn't really a suggestion).

The next time someone asks me if he sleeps through the night I might just lose it. But until then, this face and the big smiles I get when he first wakes up in the morning are all I need to get through the day. Thank you very much!

Weigh-In Wednesday

Total Lost: 0 lbs

This week's recap: Exercise was better this week. I even start the 30 day shred. The biggest challenge was the heat! Food was still tricky. We went to my parents to eat and had pizza one night and take-out chicken another. We also had a BBQ on the weekend and I tried to not eat too many chips, desserts, etc. but they're calling to me! Exhaustion has crept in too. Monkey is teething and is up WAY too often throughout the night. I'm so tired!

Goals for next week: Lose 2 lbs! Do 30 day shred at least 5 days by next Wednesday. Eating healthy and avoid snacking too much. An extra serving of fruit each day and a small salad with dinner. Keep on track with the water. DH has challenged me to make something from each cookbook in the house or he is going to get rid of them so I'm going to use one of my old WW's cookbooks this week.

Traveling with Tots

After reading another Mommy blog, Life As We Know It, I started thinking about trips and what do we do now that Monkey is here. My husband and I weren't big travelers before Monkey arrived. The furthest I've been was Hawaii (honeymoon) and he'd been to Italy with some of his family, but in our four years together we haven't gone on many trips.

I think trips are important, from a parent aspect, but also from a teacher's perspective. I used to think, "we are going to take Monkey on all of these trips, and have all of these memories and give him all of these great experiences.

Those ideas haven't gone completely away but there are WAY to many logistics to take him on long trips right now.

I also started thinking about my favourite recent trip. It was definitely a cruise we took to Alaska with my husband's family. I consider myself outdoorsy and this was perfect! We went on an Alaskan crabbing boat, went to a glacier and even saw some whales.

My Monkey

Today's post is all about my little Monkey. He's the cause of my weight gain, but also the motivation to lose it.

I can't believe he's already 6 1/2 months old! Time has just flown by. His newest accomplishments:

-surviving teething (2 teeth on their way in)

-crawling backwards

-rolling over both ways

-sitting up

-eating solids

-babbling like a crazy man!

I admit, the first few months of Monkey's life were bad. He was always crying and miserable, didn't sleep much at all, we had so much trouble breastfeeding and I really began to question my ability to be a good mother. We hit the 5 1/2 - 6 month mark and I can't imagine my life without him. I've tried and it's just blank. He's absolutely amazing!

We do want more monkeys but I'm beginning to question how much life will change with another baby in the house. So much of my attention is focused on Monkey #1 that I feel as though bringing home another baby will affect him so badly! I know this isn't the case as I have 3 other siblings, I am the oldest and I turned out alright, but it makes me think.

Here is my Monkey as a newborn and again at 6 months. They grow too fast!

Weigh-In Wednesday we first Weigh-In Wednesday:

Previous weight: ---

Today's weight: 182 lbs (ok, I'm breathing again)

This week's recap: Well, exercise has slacked a little mostly due to the heat. By the end of tonight I'll have played 4 softball games so I'm counting that. I did run 3 times last week, but haven't done much this week. Eating has been alright as well. I need to stay away from the sweet stuff though.

Goals for the next week: I'd like to lose at least 2 lbs (4 would be great!). I'd like to do some sort of running/30 day shred/softball everyday up to my next weigh-in so hopefully this heat breaks soon. Food wise, no candy, 1 pop a day, at least 6 glasses of water a day.

Challenges: Heat!! I love it, but I hate it; a teething, miserable Monkey who hasn't napped as often; class; my own self defeat; friends' BBQ on Saturday.

Saturday is my Scrumptious Saturday...I'm looking for something healthy to bring to the BBQ...any ideas or websites you find helpful for recipes?

Tell-It-All Tuesday

I was going to call my Tuesday's posts Truthful Tuesdays, but I like Tell-It-All better. I don't know why.

This Tell-It-All Tuesday is a slight bit of a rant on what I consider to be "dieting myths".

Myth #1 - It's a Lifestyle Change
I call B.S. to this. I don't want my entire lifestyle to change. I enjoy getting up late. I enjoy watching Maury. I enjoy going for leisurely strolls. I enjoy sweet stuff. I just want my butt, rolls and cankles to go away, so please don't tell me I need to change my entire lifestyle. I think some parts can change, others can stay the way they are, thank you very much!

Myth #2 - You need a gym to reach your goal
I don't need a gym. The gym needs me. Yeah, that's right. They need me to sign up for a membership, pay all the fees and not show up because J refuses to nap, or I can't make it in the impossible "time zone" the daycare is available for. I'm going to do this without a gym. So B.S. to you gym!

Myth #3 - Diet plans suck!
Seriously!? I don't have the money to pay for someone to make me meals, and if I did, it wouldn't be portioned food. It would be gourmet! The ones that give you recipes to use? They can come tell my 6 month old that Mommy needs to cook for the next 20 - 30 minutes so you need to play quietly by yourself. B.S. diet plans!

Myth #4 - The scale does lie.
Especially if you don't calibrate it properly. Okay, not B.S. the scale, B.S. to me not calibrating it. I'm getting a digital one A.S.A.P.

Phewf. I'm done my rant. Time to go get a chocolate bar (just joking)!

Why Now?

Last night I sat thinking about why to start this big lifestyle change now. There are a bunch, so bear with me.


...I feel like a big lazy bum

...I can't play my favourite sport (softball) to the best of my ability

...fitting into my old work clothes before maternity leave runs out (lame..I know...but I like the clothes)

...being able to look in the mirror without analyzing everything

...10 year high-school reunion in October brother's wedding in September

...and FINALLY... little Monkey. Showing him a healthy lifestyle is important. I've seen him eyeing some of my food thinking "how come you get that and I have to eat apples?" I know I'm not overly obese, but no one in my family is and there are a slew of health issues to deal with. I want to be around to see my Monkey (and subsequent Monkeys...yes, there will be some) grow up!

Welcome to my Journey!

The title of my blog says it all: Chronicles of a Shrinking Mommy. Weight and healthy eating has always been a struggle of mine. A few years ago, my weight jumped up to 165lbs. seemingly (obviously not though) overnight. Using a popular weight loss program, I worked my way back down to 150 lbs. Then I got pregnant with my little Monkey. During the pregnancy, I topped out at 185 lbs. Well, apparently I haven't done a good job with losing any of it.

I'm hoping this blog will keep my accountable, as well as assist others on their journeys. Through "Weigh-in Wednesdays", "Scrumptious Calorie-Saving Saturdays" and "Truthful Tuesdays" I hope to record my journey and share my successes with all of you!

At this point, things are only looking up down from here!
